Author Catch-up with Miriam Wakerly
As a new member I do not know what the other authors on LoveaHappyEnding.com know about or normally do with regard to book festivals and suchlike. I wonder if any attend the Winchester Writers’ Conference, this year to be held 24 – 26 June. Details are not yet available on their website. http://www.writersconference.co.uk/ but year on year the format is much the same.
It is a great opportunity to attend workshops, talks and discussions and generally meet both writers and readers. Also it is possible to make appointments to see an agent to offer your work and discuss its future.
In 2010 Sir Terry Pratchett gave the opening address. http://www.writersconference.co.uk/Video1.htm
The last time I went, in 2009, Michael Morpurgo opened the conference with a wonderfully entertaining talk. This was the year I got together with two writer friends to share a ‘stand’ – basically a table we adorned with our books, presenting them with as much style as we could. We had such a fun day! Considering the stiff competition and the fact I had only one book then to offer, I was pretty pleased to sell 11 copies on the day, make many contacts and hand out flyers.
This year I will not be able to do this. I am delighted to be taking part in a Summer Audience on 16 June in Tetbury, my home town. Since we were planning to arrange a family holiday around this time, my husband and I decided to combine the two events; so a holiday cottage has been booked for us, our adult children plus grandchild and our dog! Not all of these will be attending the Summer Audience. Anyway, this means I will not be back in good time for 24th.
But I wondered if any of you might like the idea of doing what we did.

I’ve never been to Winchester but I hear it is an excellent conference. My stamping grounds are the SAW (Scottish Associaton of Writers) Conference in March, Harrogate Crime festival in June, and this year I’ve added Crimefest in May, and Bloody Scotland in September. Oh, and I’ll also be at Tetbury, of course. It’s going to be a busy year.

Oh My Gosh, love the cover for Shades of Appley Green. Makes me yearn for summer.
